ECHA adds five hazardous chemicals to the Candidate List and updates one entry
Helsinki, 21 January 2025
The Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC) now contains 247 entries for chemicals
that can harm people or the environment. Companies are responsible for managing the risks of these
chemicals and giving customers and consumers information on their safe use. – Two newly added substances (octamethyltrisiloxane and perfluamine) are very persistent and very bioaccumulative. They are used in the manufacture of washing and cleaning products and in the manufacture of electrical, electronic and optical equipment. Two substances have persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties. O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate is used in lubricants and greases. The reaction mass of: triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives is not registered under REACH. It was, however, identified as an SVHC to prevent regrettable substitution.

Vinyl Acetate added to the Proposition 65 List for cancer
January 17, 2025
California classified vinyl acetate as a carcinogen under Proposition 65, requiring businesses to provide warnings for products containing significant amounts of the chemical. Potential sources of contamination include adhesives and glues, where polyvinyl acetate is a primary component, water-based paints and coatings, textile and paper coatings, cosmetics and personal care products like nail polishes and hair sprays, and food packaging materials, where small amounts of vinyl acetate may remain. Regulatory agencies, including OSHA and OEHHA, have set exposure limits to mitigate health risks. While not intentionally present as a free contaminant, manufacturers are urged to monitor and minimize residual vinyl acetate levels to ensure compliance with safety regulations and protect
consumer health.
